- GENERAL
- ~~~~~~~
- The CLEANCOM.EXE finds and eliminates "dead" space in Resource files
- (COMMENT.SMC, COMMENTW.SMC, LEX.DAT, PNT.DAT, RWP.DAT, SCOFIELD.DAT,
- TSK.DAT). This "dead" space accumulates as these records are changed by
- the SM user.
-
- CLEANCOM operates on any such files found the current directory. If
- "dead" space exists, CLEANCOM removes it and updates the index (.NDX)
- file. It requires approximately the same free disk space as the largest
- COMMENTARY file requiring "cleaning".
-
- CLEANCOM does not require that the index (.NDX) file be present. In fact,
- if your index file is accidentally deleted, CLEANCOM can re-create it.
-
- If one COMMENTARY file record has been changed, CLEANCOM must read ALL
- records and write valid records to another file. Therefore, on big files
- like TSK.DAT, CLEANCOM runs for a long time, even if there are only 2 or
- 3 "dead" records in the file. So, we recommend:
- 1) Run CLEANCOM only when you know you have changed many records.
- 2) Run CLEANCOM at a time you will not need your computer (lunch).
-
- WARNING!!!!!!!!
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- CLEANCOM is a utility program. We tested it and use it ourselves. CLEANCOM
- attempts to remove the "garbage" records it finds. If your COMMENTARY file
- is corrupted, this results in a fixed-up file--but with potentially less
- data. THEREFORE, YOU SHOULD BACK UP YOUR FILES ON YOUR HARD DISK BEFORE
- RUNNING CLEANCOM. White Harvest Software, Inc., hereby disclaims all
- warranties on CLEANCOM and any responsibility for any damages which may
- arise from its use or miss-use.
